For Christmas 2021 we are pleased to be able to offer real, tangible support to some of our inspire* charities through their ‘Amazon wishlists’. As we all know, Christmas is a time for giving and sharing, and following on from the amazing support we received doing this at the beginning of Covid, we decided this would be a great and really easy way for you all to be involved and help.

Read on to find out a bit more about the respective charities and why not choose the one which may be closest to your heart, near to where you live, or just be a really worthy cause you’d like to help out? Click a link, send them a gift (or three) and the items will be delivered directly to them. It couldn't be any easier.

If you would like any more information on any of the charities, or if you’d prefer to donate your time through volunteering then please contact laura@thegunnercookefoundation.com or sarah.lynch@thegunnercookefoundation.com.

Bumblebee Conservation Trust

In the last 80 years, our bumblebee populations have crashed. Two species have become nationally extinct and several others have declined dramatically. Our vision is for a world where bumblebees are thriving and valued and we are working to increase the number and distribution of bumblebees by enhancing the understanding of bumblebee ecology and conservation, increasing the quality and quantity of bumblebee habitat, and inspiring and enabling a diverse range of people to take action for bumblebees.

Beacon Counselling

Our aim is to build resilience in communities by supporting adults, young people, and children experiencing mental distress to learn the coping skills they need to move on positively with their lives. We support over 2,000 people each year to improve their mental health, resilience, and well-being through counselling, group support, targeted projects, and volunteering.

We provide affordable and accessible support to anyone who comes to us for help, with specialist support for the most vulnerable groups in our community – children leaving care, children at risk of exploitation, those with severe disabilities, and those who are actively suicidal.

Calm Connections

Calm Connections support the families of children and young people with mental health challenges. We wish to send boxes to our families (both boxes for parents and for young people) to help maintain their well-being. Boxes have been designed by parents and young people and contain a number of treats (from the list) breathing techniques, journals, tips for wellbeing, meditations, and affirmations. All items are well presented in tissue paper and we have had really positive feedback from our pilot designs.

Invicta Academy

Invicta National Academy (INA) is a new not-for-profit, community interest company, established by a concerned group of parents and teachers committed to closing the educational attainment gap highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Described as a “lifeline” during lockdown by parents, Invicta National Academy, makes free, live and interactive, virtual lessons with fully-qualified teachers available to all.

As the education gap widens, the work of Invicta is increasingly important and our programmes have proved hugely successful in helping children to catch up and stay motivated. We are able to keep our lessons free thanks to generous donations and sponsorship. It costs us around £1 per lesson, per child so the more we can raise, the more children we can help.

C3 Collaborating for Health

C3 wants it to be easy to live well. We know that most ill health is due to the way we live, especially that too many of us smoke, are not physically active and eat and drink too much with an unhealthy diet. This is especially true of those people living in the poorest areas. Using an innovative app, C3 works with some of the most disadvantaged communities to help them make changes to their environment and so to their lifestyle. This community in Boscombe working with C3 has identified its priorities as creating opportunities for physical activity and more growing opportunities as well as organising community events.

Creating Adventures

Creating Adventures is a registered charity enriching the lives of adults with Autism and learning disabilities. We help them to grow in confidence and give them the opportunity to shine through our activity programme. We believe that everyone has a talent, it is just about being given the opportunity to find what they excel at, believe in themselves, be encouraged and showcase that talent. We have created a community with a variety of activities to develop their social skills, communication, expression, confidence and helping them to feel a sense of achievement and personal fulfilment.
